Abstract
The dipole moments have been measured for the excited state charge transfer (CT) complexes of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA) and 2,6,9,10-tetracyanoanthracene (TCA) as electron acceptors and methyl-substituted benzenes as electron donors. In this study measurements were made in neat donor solvents. For a particular acceptor molecule, dipole moments increase as the donor oxidation potential, Eox, decreases. In the cases of strong donor and acceptor molecules, large dipole moments may indicate the formation of 2: 1 (D+DA−) complexes.
