Abstract :
Far-infrared spectra of ehtanol samples in diamond anvil cells at pressures up to 13 GPa are reported. The freezing pressure at 295 K is confirmed to be 1.8 ± 0.1 GPa. No solid state phase transitions are observed in this pressure range. The evolution of six strongly absorbing lattice modes with increasing pressure is followed, and an approximate doubling of average hydrogen bond strength over this pressure range is deduced.
