Preparation of anthracene micro-crystals by spin-coating and atomic force microscopy study of the molecular packing

In this study we show that the use of the spin-coating technique is not limited to the preparation of micro-crystals of amphiphilic molecules, but that it can also be used to deposit molecules which do not have a hydrophilic headgroup. Hydrophilic silicon wafers were spin-coated with solutions of anthracene in chloroform. Atomic force microscopy images reveal the molecular packing of the anthracene molecules on the surface of the micro-crystals. The structure corresponds to single crystal X-ray diffraction data.
