NO reduction: reaction of a readily formed intermediate (NO)3 or (NO)3−

Electronic structure calculations suggest that a low barrier route to the reduction of NO is via a trimeric intermediate, this route being especially favourable for the anionic trimer. Such a reaction pathway may be implicated in the selective catalytic reduction of nitric oxide and may be catalysed by electron donors such as low valency metals.
