Abstract :
Imaging of the electron-beam fluorescence from CO2 excited by 10–20 keV electrons was used to calculate the excitation and collisional quenching cross-sections for the CO2+ A2Π (1→3,0,0) and B2Σ+ (0,0,0) excited states. The quenching cross-sections obtained are 49 ± 13 × 10−16 and 83 ± 17 × 10−16 cm2 for the A2Π (1 → 3,0,0) and B2Σ+ (0,0,0) excited states, respectively. The excitation cross-sections obtained for the A2Π (1 → 3,0,0) state were 4.36 × 10−19 cm2 for 10 keV electrons and 2.46 × 10−19 cm2 for 20 keV electrons. Excitation cross-sections obtained for the CO2+ B2Σ+ (0,0,0) state were 7.14 × 10−19 cm2 for 10 keV electrons and 3.51 × 10−19 cm2 for 20 keV electrons. The excitation cross-sections scaled with beam energy as E−1 ln E.
