A semi-empirical approach to electron correlations based on a non-local formalism

We present a new correlation function based on variational Monte Carlo results. The function is, for ease of implementation, semi-local, spin-independent, and semi-empirical. This approach is applied to semiconductor systems and the quantity of interest is the fundamental gap energy. We found that except for InN, these gap energies improved remarkably when compared to local density approximation results.
