  • Abstract
This study was done to evaluate the effect of the leaf extract of Gongronema latifolium on some biochemical profile of alloxan induced diabetic rats. Methods: Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (150mg/kg body weight) in Group B C and D rats while group A is the healthy control. Group C and D received 100mg and 200mg per kg body weight of Gongronema latifolim respectively for 14days while Group A and B received distilled water. Results: The results showed that Gongronema latifolium leaf extract administration significantly reduced the blood glucose, cholesterol, urea and creativine when compared with the diabetic control (p < 0.05) while the serum protein and albumin were significantly increased when compared with the diabetic control (p < 0.05). Conclusion: These observations suggest that the administration of leaf extract of Gongronema latifolium in this model of established diabetes might probably be beneficial to hyperglycaemic conditions and thus reduce the risk of cardiovascular events observed in diabetes
