Abstract
In this study, the surfaces of clays were surface-modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane to improve the dispersion of clays in clay/epoxy nanocomposites and improve interfacial strength between clays and the epoxy matrix. Wear tests were performed on unmodified (as-received) and surface-modified clay/epoxy nanocomposites at three different sliding speeds. The results showed that the friction coefficient and specific wear rate of surface-modified clay/epoxy nanocomposites were lower than those of unmodified clay/epoxy nanocomposites, regardless of sliding speed. The decrease in friction coefficient by surface modification of clays seems to occur due to the improved dispersion of clays into the epoxy matrix and improved adhesion with the epoxy.
