Abstract :
Sillimanite (Al2O3.SiO2) is found usually as a constituent accompanying with ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene,
monazite and garnet in varying proportions in red sediments. Investigations are carried out to recover sillimanite from
red sediment sources by physical beneficiation methods such as gravity, magnetic and conducting separation methods
for effective utilization. Recovered sillimanite is used for making sillimanite bricks and are fired at different
temperatures in an industrial tunnel kiln. Physical, chemical and thermo-mechanical properties are evaluated.
Mineralogical properties are correlated with the thermo-mechanical properties. The developed bricks are compared
with the standards for their suitability in industrial applications.
