Low temperature ion nitriding of the cutting knives made of HSS

Cutting knives made of HSS steel were ion nitrided at 350 °C and 500 °C. Good wood cutting performance was achieved with the low temperature process. The presence of not-bonded N atoms in the very surface indicates the shallow-ion implantation role in the low-temperature-ion-nitriding. Cutting properties of modified knives were verified in laboratory and industrial scale in several enterprises. The results achieved indicate strong relation between knives performance and enterprises production profiles.
