Abstract :
The successful service life of a component limited by high wear rate can be extended by surface modification employing high power lasers. The present work investigates the influence of process parameters on the melt profile, structure and micro hardness of a high strength titanium alloy, Ti–6Al–4V, extensively used in aerospace industries. A high power pulsed laser was used and the parameters were varied over a wide range to obtain lenticular shaped treated zone without any surface cracks. A functional relationship between the melt profile and process parameters was identified after a detailed analysis of the variables involved. Laser treatment could significantly increase the micro hardness of the treated zone.
