Abstract :
India, being an oriental country has large wealth of medicinal plants used for various ancient medicinal disciplines available in this country; “Ayurveda” appears to have been the most authenticated treasure of drugs. In many developing countries, naturally available materials continue to play a vital role in health care delivery and application of such natural products as thereuptic remedies constitute the main stay of traditional medicine. Some medicinal herbs are used as antimicrobial agents by the practitioners of traditional system of medicine in India but their use is not supported by scientific study. In the search for possible cheaper antimicrobial drugs, the present study initiated a research on screening of higher plants for antimicrobial activities. In this study we have identified the antimicrobial activity of Zingiber Officinale. For these studies we used E.coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella and Bacillus subtilis bacteria. Among the bacteria zinger showed best inhibition for Klebsiella in Butanol solvent. Inhibitory zones were identified and measured.
