Abstract :
Plumbago zeylanica belongs to family Plumbaginaceae and is distributed as a weed throughout India, in moist places. The plant has been used as a folk medicine for the treatment of rheumatic pain, dysmenorrheal, contusion of the extremities, ulcers and elimination of intestinal parasites. In this work we have identified the chemical constituent of Plumbago through HPLC and its effect on the growth of the bacteria. The plumbagin a chemical constituent of root extract was identified and the root extract was used to identify the anti bacterial activity. Using disc diffusion method, inhibitory zones of root extract on the bacteria was measured. Among the bacteria used, Bacillus subtilis was inhibited most from the others.
