Abstract :
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 15% Carbamide peroxide bleaching on shear bond strength using different bonding agents and to compare their shear bond strengths. Materials& Methods: A total of sixty premolar teeth were selected and divided into six groups of ten teeth each. Three groups were not bleached and three groups were subjected to a 15% Carbamide peroxide bleaching system. After twenty four hours, the teeth were bonded with cylinders of their respective composite using the three bonding agents. Shear bond strength of all the samples were determined by a Universal Testing Machine. Observed data were evaluated for statistical significance by using one way ANOVA followed by Dunnet’s test (P < 0.05). Results: The shear bond strength using Prime and Bond NT was 14.89±2.64 MPa for the unbleached sample and 6.56±3.89 MPa for the bleached sample. In the case of Single bond, shear bond strength was 20.78±7.90 MPa for the unbleached sample and the bleached sample showed shear bond strength of 10.45±2.95 MPa. For Clearfil SE Bond the shear bond strength was 21.96±5.12 MPa for the unbleached sample and 8.09±6.45 MPa for the bleached sample. There was significant difference between the groups of the three different bonding agents. Conclusion: This study shows that bleaching with 15% Carbamide peroxide reduces the shear bond strength of different composites bonded with dental bonding agents. The use of Clearfil SE Bond showed the most reduction in bond strength and Single bond showed the least reduction in bond strength following bleaching. Clinical significance: Bleaching treatment can affect the enamel hardness and changes in the morphology of dentin. Selection of any bleaching product should be based on the concentration of the active ingredient and the viscosity of the product. Further research is needed to investigate the bleaching agent effect on tooth sensitivity and methods to reduce its severity and frequency .Among the available bonding agents, the bonding agent that causes the least reduction in bond strength after bleaching can be used.
