Abstract
Aim of the study: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of a compound Unani formulation on weight, BMI and waist to hip ratio in patients with hyperlipidaemia.
Materials and Methods: 90 patients with total cholesterol level more than 220mg/dl and with associated conditions were included. More than 63% of the 90 patients included in this study had B.M.I. > 25. The sample size was randomized into three groups. Thirty patients in group ‘A’ received Unani formulation Safoof e Muhazzil in its classical powder form 5 g twice daily orally, in group ‘B’ thirty patients received same drug but in compressed tablet form in same dosage and in group ‘C’ 30 patients received Atorvastatin 10 mg as a standard control. Follow up was done on second, fourth and sixth week and patients were evaluated on each follow up for safety and efficacy.
Results: The mean BMI in group A before treatment was 28.05±0.89 Kg/m2 which significantly reduced to 27.2±0.84 (p < 0.001) Kg/m2 with a percentage change of 3.03% after treatment. In group B the mean BMI before treatment was 26.02±0.58 Kg/m2 which significantly decreased to 25.25±0.53 (p < 0.001) Kg/m2 with a percentage change of 2.95% at the end of the study. In control group C the mean BMI before treatment was 26.47±0.56 Kg/m2 after treatment it was significantly decreased to 26.25±0.58 (p < 0.001) Kg/m2 with a percentage change of 0.83%. There was a significant decrease of around 3% in weight in both test groups while as less than 1% in control group after six weeks of protocol therapy under prescribed diet and exercise.
