A STUDY OF ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENT OF THE NEW BORNS IN RELATION TO SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND OTHER PARAMETERS OF MOTHER

Aim: The aim of present study is determining effect of different socioeconomic parameters on the anthropometric measurements like birth weight, crown heel length, crown rump length, head circumference, chest circumference in full term newborns. These anthropometric measurements are useful to determine a baby as premature. Method: The anthropometric measurement of 300 newborn babies, conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the S. P. Medical College and associated group of hospital. Measurement of chest and head circumference were taken by passing tape over the most prominent part of respective areas the maximum transverse diameter of the chest and back of head and the supra-orbital ridge in front. Crown heel length and Crown rump length were taken with the help of specially prepared measuring board provided with two wooden pieces, one fixed and second one is sliding. Result: The mean birth weight of newborns for poor & lower middle class 2.5 to 2.7 kg and for middle & upper middle class between 2.7 to 3.5 kg. Low birth weight is found in age group up to 20 years, while birth weight increases with age and at age up to 30-35 years birth weight again decreases. It is respectively 2.73kg, 2.8kg, 2.74kg and 2.64kg. Conclusion: The socioeconomic status and other parameters of mother strongly associated with anthropometric measurements of newborn.
