Homo Diels–Alder chemistry in the synthesis of portulal: construction of the functionalized hydroazulene core

A highly stereoselective synthesis of the functionalized hydroazulene skeleton of portulal (1), has been achieved using the newly developed cobalt catalyzed [4+2+2] homo Diels–Alder chemistry.
