Pictet–Spengler heterocyclizations via microwave-assisted degradation of DMSO

For the first time the ability of DMSO to decompose rapidly under microwaves was explored in order to perform heterocyclizations in good conditions. This modified Pictet–Spengler reaction allowed, in this case, the synthesis of rigidified melatonin analogues.
