Abstract :
The synthesis and characterization data for an intriguing family of sterically encumbered tetrasubstituted organoselenium species are described. The open exterior geometry and flexibility of the multiple soft selenium-containing donor arms enhances conformational organization thus allowing the molecule to reveal a propensity for trapping Hg(II) ions. Preliminary studies on the ion-sensing properties of these molecules revealed that they can act as selective ionophores for Hg(II) ions.
