Vocationalism: a mirror on the profession

The introduction of National Vocational Qualifications in Care (Care Sector Consortium 1993) has received considerable attention in the nursing press. This article seeks to explore vocationalism and its effects on nursing. It argues that the very nature of vocational competence acts as a mirror on the profession and should encourage reflection on the nature of nursing and its professional aspirations.
