Abstract :
Pizzle rot (Balanoposthitis) in the rams and vulvitis are the potential causes of disturbed fertility in sheep. The aim of the present study was to describe the clinical and bacteriological findings of balanoposthitis and vulvitis in sheep in Glasgow, Scotland. For this purpose, 8 rams and 21 ewes were examined clinically and bacteriologically. Clinically, rams with balanoposthitis were showing damaged penises, ulcers and inflammation. The two animals, which died with balanoposthitis, had penises with blackened tips, ulcer of the preputial mucosa and purulent exudates. The affected ewes had major lesions of ulcerative vulvitis with crusting of the vulva but no visible discharge. In rams, the main predominant bacterial isolates were Streptococcus spp.(25.9%), M. haemolytica (18.5%). However, B-haemolytic E coli (3.7%) and C. pseudodiphtheriticum were less predominant. Six animals yielded A. pyogenes and Corynebacterium spp were isolated from 21 animals. E.coli was absent from these samples. The results of the present study indicate that genital tract infections in both rams and ewes are existing in sheep flocks at Cochno farm in Glasgow.
