Abstract :
We have observed the time evolution of (o-H2)n:H2O clusters, trapped in solid H2 at 4.2 K over a period of 178 h, using O2 to catalyse the ortho to para-nuclear spin conversion of solid H2. The clusters observed at time 0 of the experiment (n = 11–1) are identified for the first time. Each cluster increases and decreases over time and in turn, to give eventually rotating H2O. The H2O:O2 complex is assigned at 1593.1 cm−1 in solid para-hydrogen.
