Abstract
A new class of carbohydrate based non-ionic lipid-like amphiphiles (mannitol derived diesters and diethers having C14- and C16-carbon chains) were synthesized. Their properties at the air/water interface were studied forming Langmuir monolayer on spreading at a constant temperature of 298 K. Surface pressure (π)–area (A) isotherms of the formed films were constructed, and phase transitions with varying compression of the films were investigated. The results were compared with the behaviors of DPPC and other lipids. From PCM, SEM and TEM measurements of the thin films of the synthesized materials, morphologies of the assemblies at the air/glass interface were examined.
