Abstract :
This paper gives a first approach in risk analysis to identify the main exposure scenarios in the production of CNT-polymer nanocomposites. Our study has been led on a small-scale pilot line, in the Centro Ricerche Plast-optica facilities which produce enhanced-performances plastic by melt-moulding routes. Main hazards flows that could lead to a release of nanoparticles at workplace (exposure) have been identified. Therefore, the relevance of existing safety barriers have been assessed through measurements in order to improve the risk management in regards to nanosafety. Our approach presents some useful elements for calculating the added cost implied by nanosafety and its cost scale-up for large-scale production plants. Finally, some recommendations have been proposed to lower the risks of nanoparticle exposure during melt-moulding processes. With more or less adaptation, this work can be extended to similar industrial process operations.
