Abstract :
We prepared four potential linking ligands, [(3-py)–CHN–(CH3)C6H3–C6H3(CH3)–NH2, L1], [(4-py)–CHN–(CH3)C6H3–C6H3(CH3)–NH2, L2], [(3-py)–CHN–(CH3)C6H3–C6H3(CH3)–NCH–(3-py), L3], and [(4-py)–CHN–(CH3)C6H3–C6H3(CH3)–NCH–(4-py), L4], all of which contain an intervening biphenyl fragment. Whereas ligands L1 and L2 have two types of terminal groups (pyridyl–amine), ligands L3 and L4 have a single type of terminal groups (pyridyl–pyridyl). Ligands L1−L4 reacted with cadmium nitrate to produce {[Cd(L1)2(OH2)2]·(ClO4)2·(C6H6)}∞ (1), {[Cd(L2)2(ClO4)2]·(CH3OH)2}∞ (2), {[Cd(L3)2(OH2)2]·(ClO4)2}∞ (3), and [Cd(L4)2(CH3OH)2(ClO4)2] (4), respectively. Whereas compounds 1–3 are 1-dimensional coordination polymers, compound 4 is a discrete molecular species.
