Abstract
Strong multiple emission lines in 1550 nm region had been observed in Er 3 + : YVO 4 single crystals. A magnetic field up to 5 T was applied onto the sample to further tune the energy structures. Then crystal field theory models were built to analyze the crystal field induced- and magnetic field induced-energy splitting. In the models, both the coulomb potential between the ions and the magnetic Hamilton energy were considered as perturbations. Comparison between the experimental and theoretical results demonstrates that the calculations agree well with the experimental results. Furthermore, the calculation methods proposed here can also help people better understand the interactions between the ions and the fields, and open up a way to tailor the spectral output of the crystals, which is very important for design of wavelength division multiplexing optoelectronics and telecommunication devices.
