A compact parallel plate detector for heavy ion reaction studies

A two dimensional position sensitive parallel plate detector, with an active area of 10 × 8 cm2, was developed for heavy ion reaction studies. Position signals are extracted by using a non-standard compact delay-line, which allows saving dead spaces. The timing (≤280 ps) and position (1 mm in X, Y) resolutions of the detector make it a useful device for kinematic coincidence studies. Moreover, due to its mechanical construction, it is well suited for the implementation of a 4π structure to be built e.g. in the inner space of a Ge-array.
