Abstract :
We describe the design and performance of a prototype shower maximum detector based on a two-dimensional scintillation hodoscope with a fiber readout for the STAR experiment at RHIC. The main characteristics of the detector, namely, energy response, energy and position resolution, e−π− rejection power, and π0γ separation have been measured and calculated for different detector locations (depths) inside an electromagnetic calorimeter, different detector granularities, and various methods of construction.
