Abstract
The air shower experiment KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector) consists of an extended array of detectors for the e.m. component of the shower and a compact hadron calorimeter. Close to the calorimeter a large area shielded muon detector, employing three 144m2 horizontal detector planes made out of streamer tubes, will be implemented. The streamer tubes with a geometry of 9 × 9 mm2 will be read out on pairs of anode wires and on strips oriented perpendicularly and at 60° to the wires. The digital readout of the wires and strips provides an intrinsic angular resolution which is sufficient to discriminate muons against punch-through events close to the shower core. Stabilization of the streamer tubes in this field experiment is mandatory.
