Measurement and metrology

Taking opportunity of the celebration of the bicentenary of the decimal metric system, the author draws attention on metrology, the science that gives the meaning of measurements. Limitations to this meaning are set by uncertainties. Knowledge and reduction of uncertainties are strategic targets necessary to build and continuously improve an efficient measurement system. The founding principles for such a system were set by the decimal metric system, the forefather of SI.
