Abstract :
Earlier we have introduced the concept of the multi-cavity free-electron laser (MC/FEL) [S. Krishnagopal, G. Rangarajan and A.M. Sessler, Opt. Commun. 100 (1993) 518], and studied it using one-dimensional FEL simulations. Here we study the viability of the concept when three-dimensional effects are taken into account. To do this we have developed a new simulation program that allows for multiple wigglers and cavities. We focus on two wavelengths, in the far-infrared and the infrared. We find that the concept is still viable, and can be used to generate short and intense pulses of radiation. We also study the application of the MC/FEL to harmonic generation, and show that the scheme works.
