The attenuation of nuclear alignment along cascades in recoil-distance lifetime measurements

An accurate formalism is developed to treat the loss of nuclear alignment due to vacuum deorientation in the case where the nucleus decays through a sequence of excited states. Comparisons are made between the exact and simpler, approximate treatments. The implications for the analysis of recoil-distance lifetime measurements are discussed.
