Abstract
The essentially three-dimensional contact problem with a priory unknown contact area was analyzed by using the method of boundary integral equations only for the homogeneous elastic half-space (see, for example, [1]). In the present paper, the essentially three-dimensional contact problem with an unknown contact area is solved numerically for a two-layered elastic base (a layer on a half-space). The method of nonlinear boundary integral equations [2-4] is used. This method permits us to determine simultaneously the unknown contact pressures and contact area. After this, we find the relation between the indentation force and upsetting of the punch. This problem is of great interest for the contact mechanics of the bodies with coatings. Previously [5], this problem was solved by using asymptotic methods.
