Can a free-electron laser operate with a broad momentum spread?

Recently, a method to operate a free-electron laser with electron beams having a broad energy spread was proposed in which a device for redistributing the electronsʹ phase according to their momenta is introduced in the middle of the undulator. By properly taking into account the contributions from electrons near the edge of the phase space, it is shown that the proposed scheme does not work.
