The SPS heavy ion programme

After reviewing the states of matter and the critical behaviour provided by statistical QCD, I review the proposed experimental probes of different features and then summarize the corresponding results obtained in SPS experiments. In the final section, I try to assess what conclusions can be drawn from the presently available data.
