Abstract :
The present understanding of electron transfer processes in single collisions of light ions, such as H+, He+, and Li+, with Na atoms in the 3s ground state or 3p excited state at impact energies of a few keV is reviewed. Experimental and theoretical results at the level of total cross sections are presented. Particular attention is given to effects related to the optical preparation of the Na(3p) state. Finally, the relation of these findings to current efforts aimed at production of nuclear spin-polarized 3He is briefly discussed.
