Abstract :
Numerical simulations of possible target experiments with an intense ion beam of characteristics considered for a future expansion of the GSI accelerator system are reported. The maximum achievable densities, temperatures, and pressures in simple Au cylindrical targets are predicted with the code “Multi 2D”. We then investigate configurations with colliding shock waves, shocks impinging on a suitably inclined outer surface wall, and finally the case of a shock running through a region of renewed energy deposition.
