Abstract
The HIDIF Collaboration, set up in 1994 by several European laboratories, has reviewed the possibilities of designing a heavy-ion driver for inertial fusion and explored in particular the limits of phase-space density that can be achieved with a single-ionized heavy-ion beam from a “linac plus storage ring” configuration. This overall report gives the aims and achievements of the collaboration at the time of the 1997 HIIF Symposium, where in several papers on specific aspects of the work were presented by members of the collaboration.
