High intensity developments at GSI

This paper describes in the first part recent high current investigations and developments at the GSI accelerator facility. In addition, current preparations for an intensity upgrade for the SIS are presented. They include as a first step an electron cooler which will be installed at the SIS in 1998 to improve both the intensity and the beam brightness by about an order of magnitude. In a second step a new high current injector will be installed in 1999 to replace the present Widerِe prestripper accelerator. Finally, possible future extensions of the existing facility are briefly discussed.
