Abstract
The cost and complexity of an inertial confinement fusion scheme based on RF linacs and compressor rings depends strongly on the number of rings and the injection system adopted. As many linac turns as possible must be injected with losses under space charge not exceeding 1%. The proposed method for HIDIF uses a tilted, corner, electrostatic septum to paint Lissajous-like patterns in x–y space. This paper describes the scheme and outlines the ideas behind the compressor rings designed to meet injection requirements. Simulation examples are presented showing the nature of the beam created in the accumulators and the likely effects of space charge forces. Some details of the extraction system are included.
