Abstract :
A new system for production and acceleration of multiply charged C60 and C70 fullerene ions is being designed for basic studies on cluster physics at Tokyo Institute of Technology. Such a character of the cluster beam such as intensive power and very short pulse have attracted strong attention of scientists [1]. In order to apply this to an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) driver, it is very significant to find the way to produce a high-intensity fullerene beam. Multiply charged fullerene ions are produced by electron impacts. The energy of the electrons and of the extracted fullerene ions is variable. Ions selected by the 1st analyzing magnet are aimed and accelerated up to 100 kV through an accelerating column. Accelerated ions are analyzed again through the 2nd analyzing magnet. The ion source generates C+60 (8.4 nA), C2+60 (4.5 nA), C3+60 (1.6 nA). C+60, C2+60 and C3+60 are accelerated up to 100, 200 and 300 keV, respectively.
