Abstract :
A method to measure the 137Cs soil contamination in situ is described. Based upon the measurements of a γ-ray spectrum of the soil surface, this method allows to determine the soil deposition with an accuracy of 20% and to evaluate the thickness of the soil layer containing more than 80% of the contamination. The article contains the description of a portable device CORAD based on this method and of the software used to process the obtained data. An exposition time of CORAD does not exceed 10 min if the 137Cs deposition is more than 20 kBq m2. The results obtained by use of this method and those of the soil sampling are compared. The developed 137Cs contamination maps are presented. These maps can be used for rehabilitation simulation. Effective dose rates distribution may be calculated on the basis of the obtained data.
