Abstract
At the Heidelberg heavy ion storage ring electron cooling within the linear regime of the cooling force is systematically investigated for all degrees of freedom. Longitudinally the cooling force is measured directly with the aid of an induction accelerator. In the transverse case the dynamics of the cooling process is studied for beams having small initial diameters, i.e. low ion-electron relative velocity. The dependencies of the parameters electron density, ion current, longitudinal magnetic guiding field and expansion of the electron beam on the cooling force have been investigated for 12C6+ ions (73.3 MeV). Moreover, the influence of dispersion on longitudinal and transverse electron cooling has been studied.
