Abstract
The design for a combined single crystal and multilayer monochromator for beamline L of HASYLAB, dedicated to X-ray fluorescence detection and microfocus applications, is presented. The high-resolution Si crystal monochromator is designed for use in chemical state-selective experiments in the X-ray absorption near edge structures mode (XANES). Broadband excitation by the multilayer monochromator will enable total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) experiments and improved detection limits for microfocus X-ray fluorescence analysis in many cases, e.g. for light elements in heavy matrices. An energy range of 2.4–80 keV shall be explored by the instrument, giving access to the K-edges of elements with 16⩽Z⩽79.
