Abstract :
The effect of reduction–oxidation (redox) conditions on the luminescent properties of Ce-doped fluorohafnate glasses was studied using UV–VUV (synchrotron radiation) and X-ray (X-ray tube) excitation. In several cases luminescence not related to Ce3+ dopant was observed. In glasses doped with oxides as well as in ones melted under reducing atmosphere a broad band peaking at 340–460 nm arised. The formation of Hf3+ ions and fluorine vacancies as the precursors of the observed long-wavelength luminescence band are discussed.
