Amplifiers for use with photomultipliers—who needs them?

Photomultipliers (pmts) incorporate an electron multiplier to provide high gain with fast response. However, the high gain capability must sometimes be restricted and external gain sought because of performance limitations of the pmt. Amplifiers also perform impedance transformation and pulse shaping which is important to pulse height encoding and timing.
