Abstract :
The next-generation hadron calorimeter to be used in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC consists of over 450 000 scintillating tiles in a 2300 ton iron matrix. The tiles are coupled to 10 000 photomultiplier tubes by wavelength shifting fibers. From 2000 to 2003 more than 12% of the 192 production calorimeter modules were exposed to hadron, electron, and muon beams with momenta between 2 and 300 GeV / c . The uniformity, linearity, and resolution were studied, and the absolute electromagnetic energy scale was set. Results of these performance studies will be presented.
