  • Abstract
Mathematical model is an equation or set of equations (algebraic or differential) together with initial and/or boundary conditions that represent a chemical and/or physical phenomena in a process. One of the number of applications of mathematical model to BOS is the calculation of charge to meet tlie end point specifications of temperature, C, S and P. The latter two are required to be maintained generally below 0.03% through control of raw materials and use of flux. Carbon and temperature are required to be controlled within a specific upper and lower limits and so end point control is essentially control of these Most of the Indian steel plants use charge control models for BOS. An understanding of these models is essential for full exploitation of the same. The effect of the deviations commonly observed in plant practice by use of charge control model has been discussed in this article. Besides these, it is explained that even with correct weighing and analysis, charge calculation models are not fool-proof and additional models such as dynamic control or sensor lance control need to be used as back up facilities.
