Abstract :
The possibility of cladding titanium with conventional wear-resistant alloy layers by diffusion bonding has been investigated. These layers would exhibit the wear characteristics of the bulk material while retaining the advantages of titanium alloys. The diffusion bonding of a wear-resistant cobalt-base alloy (Stellite HS6) to Ti-6Al-4V alloy is described. Various interlayers have been used to aid bonding. The microstructure, shear and tensile strengths of these joints are reported and the role of interlayer chemistry is discussed.
