Abstract :
Composite CVD + PVD coatings combine the advantages offered by the CVD and PVD processes. Particularly in milling operations, they provide a combination of wear resistance and chipping resistance that is not obtained with CVD or PVD coatings alone. This paper demonstrates these advantages through laboratory milling tests and also discusses the underlying mechanisms. The results show that CVD + PVD coatings can be constructed using a wide range of coating materials, including TiCN and Al2O3, and that they can be advantageously applied over a wide range of substrate compositions.
